TIMMINS – One of the highlights of the winter season for nature lovers in Timmins is the annual Winter Hiking Day, which takes place at the Hersey Lake Conservation Area. It is scheduled for this Sunday, beginning at noon.
The event is a joint exercise of the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority (MRCA), the Wintergreen Fund for Conservation and the Timmins Naturalists.
The event begins with a winter survival presentation by the Timmins Porcupine Search and Rescue Group.
Following that will be the guided hike on “winter ecology” which begins at 12:30 p.m. Whether you’re a veteran or a novice hiker, you are likely to enjoy the 30-minute hike along the Hersey trails.
“The hike will be a great way to learn a little about how plants and animals have adapted to survive the cold of a Northern Ontario winter,” said Crystal Percival, the MRCA communications person.
There will also be some hot refreshment drinks and a warm bonfire to help the hikers adapt to the Northern winter. In an effort to reduce waste from disposable cups, residents are asked to bring their own travel mugs for the coffee or hot chocolate.
